Gunmen have killed a son of former Honduran President Porfirio Lobo and three other men as they left a nightclub in the country’s capital. Security video shows that at least five gunmen blocked the exit of a parking ramp early Thursday and pulled Said Lobo Bonilla and three others from two vehicles. The attackers wore what appeared to be vests from a police anti-gang squad. As the attackers fled, it appeared one had been wounded and had to be loaded into their vehicle. A spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office confirmed the death of Lobo Bonilla. Officials did not immediately comment on a possible motive.
Officials say the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and its insurers will pay $7.5 million to the estate of a North Carolina man who was wrongfully convicted of a 1976 murder. Charles Ray Finch died in January at 83. He was freed from a North Carolina prison three years ago after a federal judge overturned his murder conviction for which he spent 43 years in prison. The Wilson Times reported that the parties reached a settlement agreement that was finalized Tuesday. In December 2019, Finch filed a federal lawsuit against Wilson County, its current sheriff, two former deputies and two NCSBI employees.
A Texas lawmaker says a Uvalde police officer criticized over video of him checking his phone during the massacre at Robb Elementary School was the husband of a teacher killed in the classroom. Texas state Rep. Joe Moody came to the defense of Ruben Ruiz after the officer was singled out by some users on social media as an example of the bewildering inaction by law enforcement during the May 24 attack. Moody tweeted that the officer was the husband of Eva Mireles, one of two teachers and 19 children killed in the fourth-grade classrooms. Authorities have previously said Ruiz later tried to move toward the classroom but was detained and had his gun taken away by other officers.
As NBA summer league winds down in Las Vegas, it’s time to look at some of the players who might have done better than most in showing their potential. Paolo Banchero was stellar for Orlando. Chet Holmgren was exceptional for Oklahoma City. That shouldn't be a surprise, given that Banchero was the No. 1 pick and Holmgren the No. 2 pick in last month’s draft. But for some, these couple weeks in Vegas might have been a bit of a coming-out party. A U.S. Census Bureau director couldn’t be fired without cause and new questions to a census form would have to be vetted by Congress under proposed legislation that attempts to prevent in the future the type of political interference into the nation’s head count that took place during the Trump administration. The legislation introduced this week would put in place roadblocks against attempted political meddling in the once-a-decade census. The head count determines how many congressional seats each state gets and the distribution of $1.5 trillion in federal spending each year. A hearing was set for Thursday on the bill.

The Idaho Republican Party will consider 31 resolutions at its three-day convention starting Wednesday, including one already adopted by Texas Republicans that President Joe Biden isn’t the legitimate leader of the country. Another calls for not recognizing “imaginary identities,” a resolution aimed at transgender people. Multiple resolutions involve voting, several focusing on people not deemed sufficiently Republican taking part in Republican primaries. One resolution calls for changing Idaho’s system for statewide elections into a national-style electoral college, a process that sometimes leads to candidates winning without receiving the most votes. One resolution calls for privatizing Idaho Public Television, a long-time target of far-right Republicans.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission's administrator says voters must place their own absentee ballots in the mail in the wake of a state Supreme Court decision last week. The justices ruled Friday that absentee ballot drop boxes are illegal and voters must return their ballots in person to the local election clerk' office or an alternate site. The court didn't address who can actually place a ballot in the mail. State law says voters have to mail them, but federal law allows others to mail disabled people's ballots. Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe told reporters Thursday that right now voters are required to mail their own ballots.

Investigators say a Texas man, not his 13-year-old son, was driving the pickup truck that crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a van carrying New Mexico college golfers, killing nine people, and he had methamphetamine in his system. The National Transportation Safety Board said two days after the March 15 collision that its preliminary findings suggested that the 13-year-old was driving the van that struck the van carrying University of the Southwest students and coaches back to New Mexico from a golf tournament. But the NTSB said Thursday that DNA testing confirmed that the father, 38-year-old Henrich Siemens, was driving and that he had methanphetamine in his blood. Siemens, his son, six students and a coach were killed.
Federal officials say Kansas has received $83.5 million in federal coronavirus relief funds for projects that are expected to connect more than 21,000 homes and businesses to high-speed internet service. The U.S. Treasury Department said Thursday that the money for Kansas is part of $10 billion in funds for capital improvement projects for states, territories and Native American tribal governments. According U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids of Kansas, some 173,000 Kansas residents lack home broadband service and 307,000 don’t have access to reliable internet service. The money will be distributed through a competitive grant program overseen by the state Department of Commerce.

A Jewish advocacy group is calling on Iceland’s government to take action against a pro-Palestine website seeking to “dismantle” various Boston-area Jewish institutions that’s being hosted by an Icelandic internet company. The Anti-Defamation League said in a letter Wednesday to Iceland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs that it has already voiced its concerns about the “Mapping Project” to other Icelandic agencies but hasn’t received a substantive response. The site is an interactive map of Massachusetts listing nearly 500 local institutions — many of them Jewish — accusing them of complicity in a range of harms, including ethnic cleansing, colonialism and Zionism. The ministry didn't comment Thursday.

A federal judge has again denied a request from Steve Bannon to delay his criminal contempt trial. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols said in court Thursday that he was confident a fair and impartial jury could be seated despite extensive media coverage of the onetime adviser to Donald Trump. Bannon is charged with defying a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee that sought his records and testimony. He was indicted in November on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress. The trial is set to start Monday in Washington's federal court. President Joe Biden is widely expected to name a board of arbitrators to intervene in a freight railroad contract dispute before Monday's deadline, and that will prevent 115,000 workers from going on strike for at least 60 days. Any strike or lockout could snarl the fragile supply chain and disrupt deliveries of cars, crops, containers of imported goods and countless other products and raw materials. That board will have 30 days to make recommendations that could serve as the basis for a new round of negotiations that officials hope will yield a deal. If the two sides still can't agree on terms after that Congress would likely step in to prevent a strike.

The New Jersey Devils have agreed to terms with left winger Ondrej Palat on a $30 million, five-year contract. That's according to an AP source familiar with the details. Palat had 52 points in 71 games during Tampa Bay's three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Cup Final. The Devils turned to Palat after losing the Johnny Gaudreau sweepstakes to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Gaudreau signed a $68.25 million, eight-year contract with Columbus after deciding to leave Calgary.
One by one, 250 elephants are being moved from Malawi’s overcrowded Liwonde National Park to the much larger Kasungu park 380 kilometers (236 miles) away in the country’s north. The elephants are tracked in the park and darts are fired to sedate them. While in slumber they are moved into the large trucks that take them to Kusungu park. So far at least 40 elephants have been moved and the rest should go by the end of the month at a total cost of about $1.5 million to $2 million, according to officials. The entire process is a cooperation between Malawi’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, the International Fund for Animal Welfare and African Parks.
North Dakota spent $3.7 million last fiscal year on bonuses for some state workers, which is less than half the record amount paid out the previous year. The state's top budget writer says the drop was due in part to increased criticism about the bonuses. Only about a fifth of nearly 7,800 state employees received bonuses in the past fiscal year. The bonus program was approved by the Legislature in 1999 in an effort to reward, recruit and retain employees for hard-to-fill state jobs. The head of the public employee union says the bonuses aren’t fair and are bad for morale.

Train drivers at eight British rail companies will go on strike later this month in the second large-scale industrial action set to affect commuters in July. The Aslef train drivers’ union said Thursday members will walk out for 24 hours on July 30 over pay disputes.
